Abstract

This study aims to define physical exercise and physical activity. The author defines physical exercise, distinguishes it from physical activity and states that the two terms should not be used interchangeably. Traditional concept analysis will be used in this research. Exercise is an activity that is organized, structured, repetitive, and focused on improving or maintaining fitness. Meanwhile, physical activity is any movement powered by skeletal muscles that uses energy. Health care practitioners, especially physiotherapists, should encourage patients to do more physical activity by defining physical activity clearly, especially because lack of physical activity is a major but changeable risk factor for various diseases. Clear communication with patients is needed to provide a clear meaning of physical exercise and physical activity. Sometimes physical activity means physical exercise, sometimes it just means moving more every day. Researchers must define their terms and explain their methodology so that it is relevant and replicable.
