Abstrak

Orthopedic surgery consistently places patients at risk of significant postoperative pain due to tissue trauma and bone manipulation. Globally, more than 80% of surgical patients experience acute postoperative pain, which, if not properly managed, can hinder early mobilization and prolong hospital stays. Cold compress (cryotherapy) is a non-pharmacological management technique that works through vasoconstriction and reduced nerve conduction to alleviate pain. This study aims to analyze the effect of cold compress application on pain intensity in post-orthopedic surgery patients at RS St. Carolus. This research utilized a quantitative one-group pre-experiment pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 49 respondents selected through consecutive sampling. The instrument used was the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) questionnaire to measure pain intensity. The intervention involved applying a cold compress using a cold pack for 10 minutes, administered 4 hours post-surgery. Data analysis was performed using the T-Paired Test.  The findings showed that the average pain intensity before the cold compress was 5.59 (moderate pain). After the intervention, the average pain intensity decreased to 3.34 (light pain). Bivariate analysis yielded a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating that Ha is accepted. There is a significant effect of cold compress application on reducing pain intensity among post-orthopedic surgery patients at RS St. Carolus.
